Bellinzona Market, Canton Ticino

Windswept Bellinzona is the site of Canton Ticino’s largest market though there are others in Lugano, Locarno, and in many other towns.  Starting in September expect to see samples of the regions aromatic wine grapes as well as the sturdier vegetables we associate with the cooler weather to come.  Fall heralds food and wine related festivals all over Ticino from north to south:  Throughout September Locarno will be designated the “city of flavor” and hold restaurant-based events.  September 24 to 26 will see the grape and wine festival in Mendrisio and the surrounding winemaking area, while the weekend of October 1 will see the fall harvest and wine festival in 9 different spots in the lakeside city.  Mid-October heralds in the annual chestnut festival in Castel San Pietro in the Mendrisiotto region.
