Baking Apples

A reader has asked: I love to make baked apples all year long, but the Rome Beauties I favor in the fall aren’t available this time of year. Any suggestions for another apple?

A: Personally, I would substitute a Golden Delicious. It’s not too watery and takes well to whatever seasonings you like to use in your baked apples. Just be careful to go easy on the sugar and add a squeeze of lemon juice for the bit of tartness this apple lacks.
