Pizza Stone

I hadn’t used my pizza stone in a while, and when I heated it up in the oven, it gave off a rancid smell for a few minutes. Eventually the smell dissipated, and I baked a pizza on it and it didn’t impart any “off” flavor to the pizza as far as I could tell. Is it okay to continue to use it, or can a pizza stone be ruined?

It sounds as though some fat leaked onto the stone during the previous use and that it didn’t remain in the oven long enough after use to burn it off.  If you notice spills on the stone again right after use, wipe them well and then let the remainder that’s stuck to the stone burn off for an hour.
